Flax-Sesame Seed Treats

Ready to eat flax & sesame seed treatWhat could better than a tasty snack treat? How about a healthy and nutritious snack treat that is also utterly tasty? That’s where these flax and sesame seed treats come in.

Sesame seeds contain goodies such as zinc, iron, copper, manganese and calcium. They are also high in phytosterols which help you lower bad cholesterol. Flax seeds also pack a healthy punch as they are high in fiber, Omega-3, and lignans. In flax seeds, ALA which is the plant’s omega-3 fatty acid, has shown in studies to have the ability to inhibit tumor growth and incidence making them a good cancer fighter.

The combination of toasted flax and sesame seeds will have your family and friends asking for more. The finished seed ball treats are sweet and crunchy. If you prefer your snacks with a bit more chew, then double up on the honey in the recipe.

The following flax-sesame seed treat recipe is flexible as you can mold the seeds into different shapes with the aid of cookie cutters or baking molds, and you can add extras like chopped pecans or walnuts.

Flax and sesame treat ingredients

What you need:
1 1/2 cups roasted sesame seeds
1 1/2 cups roasted flax seeds
1/4 cup pure honey
1 lemon or lime – will only need a squeeze
2/3 cup of water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt

Preparation:

1 – Roast sesame and flax seeds on cookie tray in oven heated to 325° for approx 8-12 minutes. Mix well a couple of times while roasting. Watch carefully so you don’t over-roast the seeds. You can buy and use toasted seeds as well, but they are not always easy to find in bulk.

2 – In sauce pan heat together the honey, water, lemon/lime and sugars – stir gently to mix then allow to gently boil. In approx 15 min over medium heat the sugar should start thickening and turn a nice golden amber-brown. Do not heat too long or at too high of a temperature or it will burn! See images below.

3 – Remove saucepan from heat once it is reached the right consistency and combine toasted flax and sesame seeds directly in the saucepan with salt. Allow mixture to cool for a couple of minutes then begin taking golf ball sized chunks into your hands and roll into tight balls. Place on cookie sheet and allow to cool completely. You can also place them in a freezer to speed the cooling/hardening process. Be careful if using your hands – the sugar may still be very hot!

The finished treats will keep for a few days in a sealed container. Though they probably won’t last nearly that long. If you try this recipe please let us know how it worked out for you by leaving a comment below.
