About Taha the Play:
TAHA is based on the story and works of the celebrated Palestinian poet Taha Muhammad Ali (1931-2011). The poet’s forceful verses documented hopeful survival after 70 years of loss – loss of his home, his lover, his friends and his shop in Saffuriyah in Galilee. His works are an optimistic expression of the Palestinian people.
Adapted from Adina Hoffman’s book “My Happiness Bears No Relation to Happiness”, writer-performer Amer Hlehel created a solo performance that interweaves Taha’s exquisite poetry with his compelling life’s journey. TAHA powerfully communicates the sorrow, humor, resilience and humanity of this extraordinary man and artist.
TAHA has toured the world, delighting audiences and critics with performances in the UK (Young Vic), US (Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts), Edenborough (Best Production-Asian Arts Award 2017), Australia (Adelaide Festival), Singapore (Singapore International Festival of Arts).
★★★★☆ “A rich, vivid and moving monologue… acutely moving. Simply beautiful.” “…the language uncoils like perfumed smoke, sensuous, evocative, hypnotic. And Hlehel is piercingly affecting…” ~ The Times UK
★★★★☆ “[A] delicate, deeply affecting piece…” An inspiring piece… is warmly recommended” ~ The Independent UK
★★★★☆ “Pure poetry blossoms in deceptively simple show.” ~ Evening Standard/Go London
★★★★★ “Anchored by his own excellent text, Amer Hlehel is splendid as Taha.” ~ Daily Review Australia
